1 - Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna)- for bees, other pollinators, butterflies, moths and birds

  • about the best plant for 'Doubling up' - a brilliant plant for wildlife
  • a deciduous tree with a maximum height of 15 metres - but tolerant of pruning even as a hedge
    • cut each side of the hedge on alternate years to have berries on the side cut the year earlier
  • flowers in May, birds nest in the thorny shelter, some moth caterpillars feed on the leaves
    • then winter berries for the birds
  • easy going - sun or partial shade, exposed or sheltered, facing any direction, not fussy about soil

2 - Buddleja (Buddleja davidii) - brilliant for bees, other pollinators and butterflies

  • one of the best plants for 'Doubling up' - a brilliant plant for wildlife
  • a deciduous shrub with a maximum height of 3 - 4 metres
  • flowers through summer into early autumn (choice of flower colours - white, mauve, purple, plus)
    • prune hard for maximum flowers
  • easy going - sun or partial shade, exposed or sheltered, but not North facing, not fussy about soil
